Mother's Day is a celebration honoring mothers and motherhood, maternal bonds, and the influence of mothers in society. It is celebrated on various days in many parts of the world, most commonly in spring. (e.g., April–May in the northern hemisphere, October in Argentina, but northern hemisphere spring, May, in Australia). 11th May is being celebrated in India and some other parts of the world.
A 3-cent stamp issued in 1934 to commemorate Mother's Day. It is an adaptation of James McNeill Whistler's portrait of his mother, entitled "Arrangement in Gray and Black." Known for his wit and eccentricity, Whistler was one of the most influential painters and etchers in the 19th century art world.
