Majestic emperor penguin on new US stamp

image

Date of Issue – 1 June 2015

US Postal Service has released a  stamp dedicated to animals. This particular issue pays tribute to the majestic emperor penguin (Aptenodytes forsteri). The item was unveiled and put into circulation on the 1st of June.

image

Largest of the penguin species, the emperor stands over three feet tall and can weigh more than 80 pounds. Emperor penguins rely on a layer of fat and a waterproof coat of short, stiff feathers to protect them from the subzero temperatures, powerful winds, and icy waters in their Antarctic habitat. Emperor penguins can dive deeper than 1,500 feet in pursuit of fish, squid, and crustaceans ‒ farther than any other bird. They can stay submerged for nearly 20 minutes, though they usually resurface much sooner.

Penguins Digital Color Postmark

image

The stamp art is a stylized drawing of a pair of emperor penguins on a cool green background. The pop of orange and yellow on the birds’ beaks and ear patches lends a regal look to the aptly named emperors.

Penguins is being issued in self-adhesive sheets of 20 and coils of 100 stamps. The words “ADDITIONAL OUNCE” on this stamp indicate its usage value. Like a Forever® stamp, it will always be equal in value to the applicable price for the price category printed on them at the time of use.

Love Your Pet: Responsible Pet Ownership is a colourful new stamp series that offers reminders of the importance of spaying or neutering, regular visits to the veterinarian, proper nutrition, creating comfortable surroundings, and plenty of play, exercise and attention.

imageimage

“Companion animals enrich our lives and bring us joy and happiness on a daily basis.  This stamp issue,  creates  awareness of what it takes to keep pets happy and healthy”.

“These stamps artistically demonstrate some of the important ways that we can ensure that our companion animals receive the physical and emotional care they deserve”, says Barbara Cartwright, Chief Executive Officer, Canadian Federation of Humane Societies.

The animals in the bright, lighthearted artwork all show warmth and express personality in scenes where they are cared for responsibly. It’s a visually appealing and celebratory way of illustrating the pets in our lives, while reminding us about ways of keeping them safe, healthy and happy.

image

Date of Issue : 31st July 2014

On July 31st, 2014, An Post issued eight new stamps “Continuing the celebration of Ireland’s biodiversity”

The species featured in this issue are the scallop, otter, viviparous lizard, badger, wren, mute swan, basking shark and violet snail. These eight new stamps are a part of An Post’s Irish Animals and Marine Life definitive series.

As an island, Ireland and its surrounding waters provide a home for many species of plants, animals, fungi and microorganisms. This variety of life is called  biodiversity and here, as in many other places on Earth, it is a very important part of our day to day life.

Compared to the rest of Europe, Ireland does not have a great many indigenous species of animals. There are only 26 land mammal species native to Ireland, one land reptile, three amphibians, about 400 birds and 400 types of fresh and saltwater fish. The stamps will promote the protection of  natural heritage.

In this series, 8 new animal species are featured. The series features 50 animal species found in Ireland and its surrounding waters and aims to bring as diverse a sample of Irish animal and marine life as possible.

Baby wildlife on new Canadian stamps

image

Date of Issue : 31 March 2014

Here is Baby Wildlife series from Canada Post featuring five cute baby animals, the baby beaver, mountain goat, puffin, wapiti and burrowing owl.

About the animals

At birth, adorable baby beavers already have thick fur, sharp teeth and open eyes. They can see, hear, walk and even swim. After two years, kits leave the colony.

Mountain goat mothers bear their kids on the isolated ledges of the dangerous rocky terrain they call home. Just three days after birth, horns start to show and soon after, the kid is ready to explore and play with other youngsters.

Puffin males prepare burrows on ocean cliffs with grass, twig and feather linings. After 40 days, the 40-gram chick hatches and some five weeks later, takes its first flight at night.

Burrowing owl parents assure the comfort of their chicks by lining the burrow in feathers, dried plants and dry shredded cow manure. By August, the chicks begin living independently as they prepare for the annual migration to the south.

Wapiti – sometimes known as elk in North America – are born in May or early June after a gestation period of just over eight months. After birth, the cow hides her newborn until it can run if threatened.
