India celebrates Teacher's Day on September 5 every year on the birthday of Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. Dr Radhakrishnan was one of the most influential scholars in the field of philosophy and religion during twentieth century.
He was the first Vice President and second President of India. He served as the President of the country for one year.Dr Radhakrishnan was born on September 5, 1888. Since 1962, this day is celebrated as Teacher's Day. He has major contribution in the formation of contemporary Hindu identity.
On his birthday, when his friends and family insisted to celebrate it, he replied "Instead of celebrating my birthday, it would be my proud privilege if 5 September is observed as Teachers' Day." Thus, the day is celebrated as Teacher's Day.
Dr Radhakrishnan served the Department of Philosophy at madras Presidency College in 1909. Thereafter he taught the same subject to students of university of Mysore.
Radhakrishnan was awarded several high awards during his life, including the Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award in India, in 1954, and honorary membership of the British Royal Order of Merit in 1963. Radhakrishnan believed that "teachers should be the best minds in the country".
One of his famous quote used in many schools is "Education is the ability to listen to almost anything without losing your temper or self confidence." He always believed that a good teacher is the one who remains a student all his life and in this process he not only learns from books but also from his students.
A special cancellation was issued by Patna GPO on 5th September 2013 to celebrate 125th birth anniversary of Dr Radhakrishnan.
